EL CASTELL

The old plot  that is occupied by the “Centro abierto educativio cultural del casco histórico el Castell” (Open educative culture center of the historic town el castell), was once a school that occupied al of the plot over two stories with difficult access. This project included the demolition of the existing buildings with the goal of recovering the historic piece of land because of its high cultural, historic and touristic interest.

El castell, translated to English as “the castle” receives its name from an old fortress that was built at the beginnings of the XIV century as part of the old town’s fortification offering a perfect overview of the cities topography and the sea.

El Castell opens with an accessible and pedestrian circulation, open to all visitors and neighbors of the city, the history, the morphology, the architecture, the landscape and topography of La Vila Joiosa as a museum circuit and center of historical interpretation.

The materiality remembers of medieval fortifications build in monolithic stone and wrought elements; stairs, ramps and ledges are made from massive stone elements from a nearby quarry in order to resemble the looks and feels of the original castle. Leaning over the ledges gives a strong feeling of being at a medieval watchtower or an old castle. Clearly delimited gardens, surrounded by stone that are indirectly illuminated by night, or the mediterranean sunshine by day shows a hard, mediterranean and aromatic garden, with a strong character and full of green. The central water fountain stands monolithically, cracked by water and covered in different handmade artisan finishes and textures remembering the parade ground of the old castle. The spaces open up for dialogue, neighborhood meetings, visitors or local activities; theater and concerts, or just as a space to sit down and enjoy the quietness and silence at only a few meters of the city center.  This plot, now the center El Castell wants to maintain the silence essence of these magic spaces full of history, years and adventures to which one must approach, roam and touch in order to discover its history, natural and urban landscape as well as its neighbors.

El casco antiguo (the old town) is declared good of cultural interest as an historical and art complex, being the highest level of protection in Spain, as well as being considered “the best preserved” in the Comunidad Valenciana, which is all included in this equipment.

This educational and cultural equipment binds the old town as a resource for cultural education in a local environment, improving the quality of life in the neighborhood and revaluing this jewel of cultural heritage of the valencian culture.
